What is Turmeric?

Turmeric, also known as “turmeric” (scientific name: Curcuma longa), is a plant from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.

What are the main components of Turmeric?

Curcumin: is the main component and bioactive compound in turmeric (Curcuma longa), a plant belonging to the ginger family. Curcumin is a polyphenol and belongs to the group of curcuminoids. It has a chemical formula of C₁₁₁H₁₀O₃ and is characterized by its phenolic structures.

Essential oils: Turmeric contains essential oils that are responsible for its characteristic scent. These oils include turmerone, zingiberone and other compounds that contribute to the aromatic properties of turmeric.

Polysaccharides: are complex carbohydrates consisting of long chains of monosaccharides (simple sugars). They are an important class of organic compounds and play a central role in the biochemistry of plants and animals.

Vitamins and minerals: Turmeric is rich in various vitamins (such as vitamin C and some B vitamins) and minerals (such as iron, potassium and manganese).

Plant substances: In addition to curcumin, turmeric also contains other bioactive compounds that offer potential health benefits.

Why turmeric in combination with pepper?

To maximize the benefits of curcumin, it is often recommended to consume turmeric together with black pepper, as piperine (the active ingredient in black pepper) increases the bioavailability of curcumin by 20 times.
